Yankee Candle Covid Reviews: Terri Nelson had an unusual question about covid-19: Would that be reflected in online reviews of fragrant products if the virus robs people of their sense of smell? To find out, the Portland, Ore., a science illustrator and cartoonist, said she looked up reviews of “the smelliest holiday thing I could think of”—scented candles.
“There are angry ladies all over the Yankee Candle site reporting that none of the candles they just got had any smell,” she posted on Twitter last week. “I wonder if they’re feeling a little hot, and nothing has a lot of taste for the last couple of days,” she added, nodding to other typical coronavirus symptoms.
A late-night joke, like a punchlineskin, read Nelson’s commentary that created thousands of retweets and likes on the social media platform. But Kate Petrova, a Harvard adult development research assistant at Bryn Mawr College, caught attention by deciding to test the theory by scraping nearly 20,000 reviews of the most common scented and non-stroke candles in Amazon.
